Oregon lawmakers have again proposed extending overtime rights to farmworkers, setting up what could be a contentious fight between farmers and farmworker advocates.
Most non-farm hourly workers in Oregon already receive overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours in a week. The law, though, has long excluded agricultural workers.

Hours are being cut in local fields because as of Jan. 1, farmers with 26 or more workers have to pay overtime for work done beyond eight hours, and work totaling more than 40 hours per week.
Farmworker Carlos Mendoza, 50, said he feels helpless not being able to work Saturdays anymore because his employer won't pay overtime for work done after eight hours per day or 40 hours per week. "There's nothing you can do," Mendoza said.

In a statement through her attorneys, Morgan said the company's actions, and subsequent litigation tactics, were all intended to avoid paying her and other workers what they are owed.
