Spend management: The next big wave in accounting automation

If a "big wave" ushers in changes to the way we do things, how we understand things and even how we relate to each other, spend management is a tsunami.

Spend management improves the efficiency of accounting and operations by automating time-consuming, error-prone manual work. It shortens the time-to-close, provides for continuous accounting and even opens the way to a rolling, or continuous, close. Further, with modern spend management, teams work together cooperatively and asynchronously, and experience an increased sense of accountability, ownership and agency with respect to their spending and their company's budget.

Why today's younger generation of employees are eager for robots to play a bigger role in finance

We are all emerging from this year of chaos changed, but the next generation of finance professionals may experience a bigger change than most. The pandemic will hasten a dramatic shift in their day-to-day work - and fundamentally alter the skill sets that they need in the future.

It all comes down to technology. In 2020, organizations had to develop survival plans quickly - some because revenue was uncertain and others because demand dramatically increased, and they had to scale as soon as possible. In either case, finance leaders found that their systems were not well-positioned. It required finance teams to spend more time on manual processes and report reconciliation that reported history but not the sorely needed current insight.

What Worked in 2020? | Comstock's magazine

Since March 2020, it's been a bad time to operate a hair salon. Alfonso and Lorena Martinez, owners of The Colour Bar, which has locations in Midtown and East Sacramento, endured three shutdowns totaling six months between March 2020 and March 2021. Early on, they had to lay off 19 of 22 staff.

But they focused on essentials: They kept their two marketing experts to stay in touch with clients and a bookkeeper to keep their finances in order. Customers bought gift certificates to show their support, and the company reminded them they could buy hair-care products through The Colour Bar's website. At first, those online sales were mostly local. But as their virtual sales ticked up, they added a graphic designer and more marketing staff to boost traffic.

SGP anticipates 15% growth in sales volume

SET-listed Siam Gas and Petrochemical (SGP), Thailand's second largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) trader by volume, expects to see its sales grow by 15% on average to 3.73 million tonnes across markets in Asia despite stiff competition.

The volume forecast is higher than last year, which tallied 3.24 million tonnes, but lower than the pre-pandemic period, said Jintana Kingkaew, deputy managing director and chief financial officer of SGP.

"Our sales in all markets will grow significantly by 13-24% as consumer purchasing power is expected to rebound as a result of Covid-19 vaccinations," said Mrs Jintana.
