Entrepreneurs and early-stage startups have a couple of opportunities to get a leg up on the competition this summer, as the Tampa Bay Innovation Center in St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay Wave in Tampa are now accepting applications for their latest business accelerator programs.
TBIC's 12-week accelerator is focused on company founders and again will be held virtually, making it available to startups across the country. Leadership and readiness for revenue and investment are the overarching themes, but cohort members will also benefit from the creation of a product and go-to-market roadmap based on market research.
Business Group Knocks Accelerated Minimum Wage Proposal, While Dems Urge Continued Unemployment
A Maryland business group panned a proposal to accelerate the state's increase to a $15 minimum wage on Thursday, while Democrats in Annapolis continued to decry Republican Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr.'s action to end extended unemployment benefits in early July.
Mike O'Halloran, the head of NFIB-Maryland, which represents small businesses in Maryland, said the minimum wage proposal — to speed up the state's transition to a $15 minimum by 2 1/2 years — would add "insult to injury for small business owners trying to recover and keep Marylanders employed."

Xometry is taking its excess manufacturing capacity business public – TechCrunch
Xometry, a Maryland-based service that connects companies with manufacturers with excess production capacity around the world, filed an S-1 form with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announcing its intent to become a public company.
Growth aside, it's clear that Xometry is no modern software business, at least from a revenue-quality profile.
As the global supply chain tightened during the pandemic in 2020, a company that helped find excess manufacturing capacity was likely in high demand. CEO and co-founder Randy Altschuler described his company to TechCrunch this way last September upon the announcement of a $75 million Series E investment :

Staples said Friday it had sent a letter to the board of Office Depot outlining a $1 billion offer — or $18.27 a share — for its consumer business, which includes the Office Depot chain of stores and OfficeMax. Staples tried to buy all of Office Depot for more than $2 billion in January, but Office Depot rebuffed those efforts. Office Depot's business-to-business unit comprised about half its $10 billion in sales last year.
This latest offer, which is all cash, comes at a roughly 43 percent premium to the 30-day average of Office Depot's share price as of June 2, 2021.
Why Doing Good Is No Longer Bad Business - WSJ
It seems the modern corporate mission statement could use an update: Do well by doing good—or else.
Earning the perception of good corporate citizenship, in the form of environmental, social and governance bona fides, is no longer optional for the modern executive. That point was driven home last month as Exxon Mobil shareholders elected two directors nominated by an upstart activist hedge fund unhappy with the oil giant's climate policies . A third director is likely to win election, the company said Wednesday.
