How to nurture your accounting staff during the pandemic

While the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines continues around the world, the return of something like normal remains, at a minimum, a few months away. As a result, many accountants will continue working entirely or partly from home.

"Colleagues are feeling the pressures from work and home," said Keith Berg, chief human resources officer of UHY LLP in Farmington Hills, Mich., part of accounting firm network UHY International. "COVID has created a longer busy season for our tax professionals. Those colleagues with younger children are also having to become part-time teacher" in addition to an accounting professional.

Former guardian charged with pillaging elderly man's estate refuses to sign final accounting

Investigators say Hudson paid herself $1,600 a day from Myer's bank account, spending more than half-a-million dollars of his money on things like jewelry, Tampa Bay Bucs tickets, and a 4,000 square foot Riverview home.

"There's no documentation as to how any of the monies were spent or not spent," attorney Charles Tillman, Jr. said during a Wednesday court hearing.

Tillman represents the personal representative for the Myers estate, alleging in a civil lawsuit that Hudson "breached her fiduciary duty" to Myers.

Greensill Crisis Exposes Murky 'Hidden Debt' Accounting (1)

Greensill Capital's meltdown highlights a problem investors, regulators, and rating agencies have warned about for more than two years: the largely untracked use of a complex form of financing that Greensill helped popularize.

Few companies reveal whether they use supply chain financing, an increasingly popular tool that helps companies free up cash by spreading out payments to suppliers—something Fitch Ratings in 2018 called a "hidden debt loophole." There are no formal U.S. or international accounting rules compelling companies to be frank with investors.

Countingup closes £9.1M for its business current account with built-in accounting features

Countingup , the U.K. fintech offering a business current account with built-in accounting features, has closed £9.1 million in Series A investment. Leading the round is Framework Venture Partners, with participation from Gresham House Ventures, Sage and existing investors .

It’s noteworthy that Countingup has previously taken investment from ING, and the addition of Sage as a backer is interesting since both could help the startup reach more business customers. It also potentially sets up one future road to exit. However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The Truth About Public Accounting, Part III: The 'A' In PCAOB Stands For

An article titled "PCAOB Inspections: Public Accounting Firms on Trial" describes the results from an academic study and survey about the effects on auditors who have been subject to PCAOB inspections. One of many good observations from that academic study is repeated below:

Respondents collectively perceive that audit quality has improved as a result of PCAOB inspections. In fact, some partners perceive that they have become so good at auditing that there exists a concern that being a good auditor has come at the expense of being a good accountant owing to the focus on developing expertise in auditing standards (i.e., internal controls and documentation) over expertise in accounting standards (e.g., revenue recognition), particularly at ranks below manager.
